How Do You Know When You're Finished?, 2014-Present
24" diameter, Colored Pencil on Paper
This portrait of author David Foster Wallace is perpetually in progress. It may be shown any number of times and be further along for each exhibition. My questions within the piece revolve around the duration of the artistic gesture, and the control we have over that duration. This question can be readdressed to human identity; who we are in a singular moment is always and never finished, we are always exactly who we are, deep down, but we're also changing over time, and never quite static from one moment to the next. The creative act that we all engage in is the creation of a self.
