This drawing is an edited remake of Caravaggio's 1604 oil painting "Entombment of Christ." In my drawing, the crowd of biblical figures has been replaced by science fiction authors (from L to R: Philip K. Dick, (upper) Kurt Vonnegut, (lower) Issac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Ray Bradbury), and Christ has been exchanged for an alien from an image supposedly taken at US Air Force compound and conspiracy Mecca, Area 51.
This piece investigates the many interesting overlaps between the function of religious texts and works of science fiction (prognostication of the future, construction of worlds and ways of living within those worlds, social commentary, etc.).
Further listening: The following is a science fiction podcast hosted by friend and artist Brent Aldrich which I am a regular guest. This drawing also functions as fan art for the podcast.
